Unhappy RIP CSM Marty "Gunny" Barreras
Awesome Ranger and a great leader. Prior Marine, came to 2/75in 1988. Team leader in 1st Plt, B Co for JC. Gut shot in A'stan a couple days ago and was stable, expected to make a good recovery. Died at BAMC this morning. RIP CSM "Gunny".

Can't log onto FB (or won't) from this location -- was he killed by friendly fire, Astan asshat turned rogue, or was he on an assault? If the latter -- a CSM on an assault -- wow.

"The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Command Sgt. Maj. Martin R Barreras, 49, of Tucson, Arizona, died May 13, in San Antonio Military Medical Center, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, from wounds suffered on May 6, in Harat Province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas."

A, don't have a lot of details, other than he was leading his men from the front. But agreed, if during an assault, wow! Not friendly fire, and no green on blue as far as I know.

CSM Barreras was my squad leader in B/2/75. He set and maintained the standard every day.

SGM's were a rare breed back in my day and you would never see one anywhere but behind a desk. Saying that Rangers lead the way is an understatement for this hero, rest easy CSM.
