Highway renamed in memory of Virginia Beach-based Navy SEAL

WTKR-TV3

A Virginia Beach-based Navy SEAL will be remembered by every driver who uses Santa Fe Drive near Denver.

Today Danny Deitz's family, friends and community leaders renamed the road Danny Deitz Memorial Highway."

Deitz died in Aghanistan in 2005.

He was one of a four-man team that got surrounded by Taliban forces.

Deitz continued to fire on the enemy, even though he was mortally wounded.

His actions saved a fellow SEAL.

His wife says this is a fitting tribute to an American hero.

"Every day when you go through this road and you pass through here, just remember that it represents the ultimate American. Someone that believed in all of you as Americans and left one early morning to one of the most dangerous places in Afghanistan and never returned back."

Dietz earned 12 decorations during his tour of duty.
