1 Raider Bn to East Coast

A friend sent me this article. Comments?

Will Marine Raiders leave California to consolidate on the East Coast?

The Marine Raiders are considering consolidating the entire elite special operations unit on the East Coast, as the force preps for the future battlefield against more sophisticated adversaries, according the Marine officials.

That would mean 1st Raider battalion — the only West Coast Raider unit — would move closer to its two other sister battalions headquartered aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

No final decision has been made regarding the consolidation effort, a Marine official said.

But two sources within the Raider community, who spoke to Marine Corps Times on condition of anonymity, said that the move was expected — if approved — to take place sometime between 2020 and 2021.

Marine Forces Special Operations Command, or MARSOC, was founded in 2005 at the direction of then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

By: Shawn Snow
The move is somewhat controversial and likely to stoke frustration among some of the nearly 1,000 Marines and personnel who staff 1st Raider Battalion headquartered aboard Camp Pendleton, California. It may also cause heartbreak among the many Raiders who have built lore and heritage at the West Coast Raider unit.

Gunnery Sgt. Lynn Kinney, a MARSOC spokeswoman, told Marine Corps Times that the “potential consolidation” of the Raiders on the East Coast is just “one line of effort," among others, to “increase performance, efficiencies, and capabilities,” as the Marine special operators plan for the future battlefield.

Kinney said the potential move of 1st Raider would “enhance” the Raiders as a whole to rapidly respond and innovate “to meet the future operating environment challenges articulated in its vision, MARSOF [Marine special operations force] 2030."

The MARSOF 2030 vision, published in 2018, called for the Raiders to consider major changes to training, education and manning in order to face down more sophisticated rising near-peer adversaries.

The Raiders contend the potential consolidation of all Marine special operations forces on East Coast aligns with the 2018 National Defense Strategy, which called for the U.S. to pivot to the return of great power competition.

The 1st Raiders move to the East Coast could result in long term financial savings and simplify and ease training burdens.

The Marine Raider Training Center — which is charged with assessment and selection, as well as advanced and basic special operations skills training — is headquartered aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, with 2d and 3d Raider Battalion.

However, one Raider cautioned that the move could cost MARSOC experienced manpower, as Raiders frustrated with the decision could opt to retire or decide not to re-enlist.

This is the future of MARSOC, according to the commander of the elite Marine Corps Raiders

“We may see a formation completely different 10 years from now,” its commander says.

It’s a risk MARSOC will have to consider in its calculus.

Raiders can’t be made overnight. The elite operators slog through a nearly seven-month Individual Training Course to earn the Raider insignia.

Their enabler counterparts — known as special operations capability specialists — have their own training pipeline that familiarizes them with operating with special operations units. These Marine hail from intelligence, electronic warfare and communications jobs fields.

MARSOC has maintained a relatively healthy graduation rates of 73 percent at its Raider school house over the past five years, according to data obtained by a government record’s request.

While no final decision has been made on the consolidation effort, there are questions about what will come of 1st Raider Battalion’s relatively new facilities aboard Camp Pendleton, and whether new buildings will need to be built to accommodate the influx of Raiders and support staff to the East Coast.

According to Navy budget documents from fiscal year 2007, 1st Raider Battalion’s new barracks, warehouse, vehicle maintenance lot and training facilities cost nearly $50 million.

I saw that yesterday and it didn't seem to make sense but I've been out of the game for a bit. 1 MRB is aligned to PACOM and moving them to Lejeune takes them out of the GCC's sphere. Special Forces Groups/ Bn's are spread out among various locales/continents, Ranger Bn's and NSW units as well. It would also be pretty expensive to move approx. 1,000 personnel, their families, replicate facilities especially after having just built a $70M dollar complex and upgraded range facility at Pendleton. It just doesn't make sense, but then again, I've stopped trying to understand certain things.

An observation from an outsider: If they do this, I suspect years from now another Raider Batt will be formed to once again reorient on the Pacific. This all sounds much like what happed to 1st SFG(A). The Group IIRC was activated in Japan during the occupation. It deactivated with the end of Vietnam, only to be reactivated in the 80s when the need arose to once again focus on Asia.
So often the story in the press justifies the relocation for various tactical or sound reasons, while in reality it is often the result of (a lack) $$$ or some organization trying to increase control over geographically dispersed elements.
Not for me to judge, but China continues to grow in threat, and the POTUS hasn't solved the issues with NoK and the Muslim threats in Indonesia, et cet. The move lengthens their ToT by 4 hours....

This is all over InstaTubeBook. Not a lot of positive comments from current (as far as one can tell from posts) members.

Damn right. I bet 1st Recon Bn and the Force Recon Co are licking their chops and measuring the drapes. Hell, why not put all three LAR Bn's at Lejeune, make it a Regiment and give some Colonel something to do. Fuck, put the entire Corps at Lejeune just for shits and giggles. I retired 10 years ago today and while I miss it tremendously, I do not miss the fuckery.

It used to be that every few years some staff geek would decide to make a name for themselves by "reorganizing" the Recon community. Once they realized Recon had been reorganized all the way back around to where it started they decided to fuck with MARSOC instead. Simple.

I'm sure it makes sense to someone.

No shit, that's what I'm getting at. How many "Fix Recon" cycles did we, the Marines/Corpsmen in the unit, have to endure before the genius' at PP&O found out that it wasn't broken to begin with. The ones making this decision are only in the job for 2-3 years max and it won't effect them. Meanwhile, the average CSO/SOO with 12-15 years will have some tough decisions.

It's the same way on the civilian federal side. My work section has reorganized three times in 10 years, and we're working on our fourth. And every section chief pushes the execute button right before they transfer, so they aren't there to deal with the shrapnel when it doesn't work.

Bureaucratically, once you consolidate something it is easier to eliminate it or, if you can’t do that, marginalize it.

This just reminds me of the motto I said almost every day, esp in Recon:

On MON, we reinvent the wheel. On TUE, we rediscover fire. On FRI, we burn the wheel and stomp out the fire so we have something to do next week. That sums up the prevailing USMC attitude toward Recon in a nutshell.

Well hell. Just put the 75th all in the same spot too.

Don't make sense to me. I'm not real familiar with MARSOC's TO but you'd think they would want a Bn. out there for a bastard Bn. Kinda like 2nd Batt.

Spot on.

Ten bucks says there are staff wienies already making plans for a MARSOC Regimental Combat Team, with a deployable RCT HQ element. SF went through this same buffoonery in the 80s.

NSW went through a version of this as well. Used to be there were six SEAL teams with eight platoons in each team; 48 platoons total. The staff waved the magic wand and created eight SEAL teams with six platoons each; 48 platoons total. But now the HQ slices increased by 30%; for the same number of operators on the ground.

The biggest problem I see with the MARSOC move/reorganization, is it's going give other SOF staffers a "bright idea"...

There have been deployed O6/COL SOF headquarters for quite a while, not sure why MARSOC wouldn't want to get in on the game, too.
