LtCol Edwin D. Miller, USMC

LtCol Ed Miller, Force Recon Association Member #26, passed away last June 10th after a long battle with cancer. In accordance with last wishes, his ashes were spread over SkyDive San Marcos, Texas.

We had two jumps. The Force Recon Association and former Marines jumped with Ed's regular skydivers at San Marcos and spread half of his ashes over the DZ. The second jump consisted of the regulars and members of the US Air Force Special Operations Command who jumped in the US Flag. A color guard from Lackland AFB presented the Colors to Ed's family. Former Marines and Soldiers manned the firing party detail and rendered honors.

A reception followed by several toasts and fond memories.

DOL!

To give credit where credit is due, Harry Hopkins (Army, Vietnam) organized the jumps and ceremony; and did an outstanding job.

I was just a participant.

Rest in Peace,Marine. Thank you for your service!

Friends held a memorial service for Lt. Col. Ed Miller, thousands of feet in the air.

After losing a long battle with cancer, Miller passed away. Friends of the Vietnam vet honored him with a ceremonial skydive in Fentress, just outside of San Marcos Sunday.

“We will remember Ed in this way," one friend said.

Miller served in Vietnam and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Friends and fellow Marines did not do the jump alone; they were escorted by three Air Force members flying an American flag.

”Everybody was pretty solemn about it. They knew what it was for and everybody wanted to do their best. We had a really nice sky dive," Friend Welson Herchek said. "He is up there grinning right now."

Miller was also a gold medal member of Team USA at the 2010 World Skydiving Championships. Sunday, those who loved him most, glided through the sky as they’ve done many times before, but this time they released the ashes of their friend into the sky he so dearly loved.

"This is something he would have really, and I know really does, honor and appreciate. All of these friends men and women that came together to jump for him and let his ashes scatter over the ground and the sky that he spent a whole lot of time in," Friend Sam Barber said. "The mood was joyous everybody was smiling and shaking hands."

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the colonel’s three sisters were presented a folded American flag

Lt. Col. Ed Miller was a highly decorated veteran. His accolades include the silver star of valor
